On Wednesday, May 11 I was lucky enough to be invited to Cirque Du Soleil’s preview performance of TOTEM now in Pittsburgh for a limited engagement. This great evening started as I met with friends at a local restaurant for dinner. Only a few of us have ever been to see a Cirque du Soleil show - me not being one of them. As we left dinner and started walking closer and closer to what they call the big top, I was amazed by the transformation of the parking lot, I had watch the work begin weeks before and finally the Big Top being pulled up. It was a site to be seen, the parking lot became it’s own little town within the city of Pittsburgh.
As the performance began I was taken back by the pure craft of these performers it is nothing short of spectacular. From the moment that the show started my mouth was on the floor. How was this humanly possible? People flying though the air, holding people by one hand while hanging upside down 20 feet in the air. It was something that you could not even explain to people, because when you did, they’d say “I don’t understand how that’s possible” and all you can say back is, “right”.
This kind of entertainment has the ability to take your breath away at every bend, dip and flip. Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM runs now through May 29th and tickets are still available at www.cirquedusoleil.com. In celebration of this limited engagement, SCC will be staying open till 8 p.m. for select performances in May: Thursday, May 12 - Friday, May 13, Tuesday, May 17 -Saturday, May 21, and Tuesday, May 24 -Friday, May 27.
